Science and innovation is central to delivering the world-class police service our public expect and deserve. It is fundamental to driving productivity and making the most of every penny invested in policing. Resources are under increasing pressure but through tools and investment in things like facial recognition, Artificial Intelligence and drones we can help to ease the strain.
Harnessing new technology and innovation will save forces time, money and resources. It will transform policing by increasing productivity and this will ultimately ensure a better service for victims and the wider public.
The Science and Innovation Committee (SICC) is part of the NPCC and was established in February 2024 . It is led by Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan of South Wales Police.
It aims to provide a coordinating voice, communicating our priorities to the Home Office’s Commissioning Boards, the Strategic Change and Investment Board (SCIB) and will work closely with the National Science and Innovation Board (NSIB) and the Office of the Chief Scientific Adviser to ensure the proactive coordination of the delivery and implementation of the National Policing Science and Technology Strategy.
The SICC will also provide audit and assurance of the Police STAR Fund, ensuring innovation is thriving across policing as well as working with the Department of Science Innovation and Technology.
